Character Design class

Right now I'm in a class where we talk about what makes a cool character design and it is amazing. I used to think I was a pretty good little artist, but seeing what some of these other guys are coming up with is eye opening. Humility is a good thing.

I just realized, looking at these, none of the characters are happy. I'm going down hill....

WOW! Maybe they're grumpy because they have to pack all the possessions for a family of five. (That's why I'm grumpy!) Seriously, you are very talented.

I must admit, I don't envy you. We've moved 3 times in the past year and I'm not looking forward to when I have to do it again. I fear that it will be some time before we are firmly rooted. Thanks for the compliment Mindy.

How do you feel about taking a class that has you doing cartoons like this? Is this necessary for animation? I look at these and then the other art on this page and think it is too easy (or something) for you. I can't quite put a handle on it. I guess it all adds up to many different skills that make the whole artist, right?

Yeah, these classes are more important than you might think. Character design is more than drawing cool pictures. It's communicating what a person is and how they might act by what they look like. The angry boss, for example, has no neck and beady eyes to enforce that he has tunnel vision to his detriment. He his more worried about the employee being 10 minutes late than how the person is doing.

Characters and their appeal is very important and relative to a good cartoon show or film. It actually stretches the mind to try to work in other styles. I love it.

Dude (must get rid of that word), every time I read your blog at work people passing my cube stop and ask who did those drawings, even if they're frowning drawings. I like frowning drawings. You know what, I have never seen a drawing from you that I didn't marvel at (I also have short term memory only - just kidding). Dang good work my left brained brother.

Boss Baby (2017) The Fight in the Airport

Boss Baby and Tim have escaped from the Killer Manny.  They have made it all the way to the airport by bike and Tim has just saved Boss Baby from the dangerous travelling crowd.  They've ALMOST caught up to Tim's parents!  But then THIS happens:

Creating the Anhedonia Logo

This is the animated logo at the end of the new television show, Mr. Sunshine. Think "Sit, Ubu. Sit." or "Bad Robot!!" You can see it better quality at http://vimeo.com/20228001 A few months ago I got a call from my friend Matt Davis asking if I would maybe, possibly be somewhat interested in considering working on a logo like that for Matthew Perry. I jumped at the chance. The company is called Anhedonia Productions, and you're probably wondering what in the world "Anhedonia" means. It's the inability to experience pleasurable emotions from normally pleasurable life events. A pretty crappy situation, but comedy goldmine. I worked with Andy Erekson and Marcelo Vignali (and his daughter) to come up with a list of 50 ideas of what this logo could be within the theme that Perry had already set up. I boarded out 7 of those ideas and created 3 animated beta tests. Here are some of my favorites... For exploration: Face on Jumbotron Rodeo Christmas tre...
