Joseph Leonard Grover

I trust you’re enjoying a wonderful, relaxing, and meaningful birthday with your loved ones around!  Allow me to be just one more admirer and show my gratitude for you being born 40 years ago.

Time goes fast, doesn’t it?  And it's moments like these that help me remember all that we've been through.  Can you believe it's already been 6 years since we met up in St George to go skiing? That was so much fun and felt so good to catch up again. And in some ways, it feels like it was only a year or two ago.  It's been 11 years since you helped us pack up our things when we moved to California. It was only 17 years ago when we worked together at Digital Mind studios and 19 years ago when we started Flashback videos!  Man, I loved those times.  I learned so much in those days.  So much about timing and storytelling, stuff that I still use daily in my career.  It's been 21 years since the first PPP experience* and then we left on missions on opposite sides of the planet.  And it’s been about 22 ½ years since we first pulled out our driver's licenses to confirm that we were indeed born on the same day.  And it was 40 years ago we jumped down from Heaven the same day ready for this amazing adventure

I’ve been so grateful to have you as my best friend and confidant for over two decades.  I know we don’t get to see each other as often as we’d like, but the friendship is still just as strong as though we were in the same state.  I wouldn’t say that we’re over the hill, we’re just on top of the hill.  We’re on the mountain peak with the best and highest vantage point.  We can see where we’ve come from and we have time to plan and prepare for the future.  I have a lot of confidence in you my friend.  I could feel it in those early HOBY days, you have a lot of work ahead of you and you are equal to the task.

Thanks for being a good friend, a good example of a worthy father and husband in these crazy times, and for being honorable and trustworthy.  You’re a great man, a great friend, and I wish you all the best on this momentous birthday!

Happy birthday, brother!!

PS:  I love the idea of setting up another mancation this year…

*That PPP experience was one of the more transformative moments of my life.  It was like I was a lightning rod receiving a witness.  Thanks to you and thanks to your awesome Dad.

Boss Baby (2017) The Fight in the Airport

Boss Baby and Tim have escaped from the Killer Manny.  They have made it all the way to the airport by bike and Tim has just saved Boss Baby from the dangerous travelling crowd.  They've ALMOST caught up to Tim's parents!  But then THIS happens:

Creating the Anhedonia Logo

This is the animated logo at the end of the new television show, Mr. Sunshine. Think "Sit, Ubu. Sit." or "Bad Robot!!" You can see it better quality at http://vimeo.com/20228001 A few months ago I got a call from my friend Matt Davis asking if I would maybe, possibly be somewhat interested in considering working on a logo like that for Matthew Perry. I jumped at the chance. The company is called Anhedonia Productions, and you're probably wondering what in the world "Anhedonia" means. It's the inability to experience pleasurable emotions from normally pleasurable life events. A pretty crappy situation, but comedy goldmine. I worked with Andy Erekson and Marcelo Vignali (and his daughter) to come up with a list of 50 ideas of what this logo could be within the theme that Perry had already set up. I boarded out 7 of those ideas and created 3 animated beta tests. Here are some of my favorites... For exploration: Face on Jumbotron Rodeo Christmas tre

Boss Baby (2017) Tim teaches BB about imagination - Deleted Scene

You've seen Boss Baby, of course.  This is the Sequence when Boss Baby and Tim are on the airplane headed to Las Vegas and they take the time to practice a little imagination play.  The idea was to explore what Boss Baby's version of imagination would be.  Initially, he's going to think of everything in terms of business, right?  A pirate ship would be made out of sky scrapers, naturally.  Ultimately it was cut for time, but it was a fun sequence to work on.
